Alumni Nikki S. discovered the academic lifeline she needed to excel and earn her MS in Applied Behavior Analysis through social and emotional support at National University. Nikki works as a board-certified applied behavior analyst and clinical supervisor for patients on the autism spectrum, helping them learn in their own unique ways while gaining independence. Being surrounded by a close-knit group of friends and family is key to Nikki, who grew up in the Phillipines. Reflecting on her upbringing, she says, “It wasn’t just about coming from a huge family, which I do. There’s the cultural value of community, just taking care of each other. If there’s someone who needs your help, we’re there for each other, and it feels good. You have that support whenever you need it. Not everyone has that, and that’s why I strive to bring social and emotional support into everything I do.” As Nikki can attest, attending college is stressful — from taking exams and managing heavy workloads to figuring out how to pay for tuition and books. Alumni Pedro Aguilar was one of seven children raised in East Los Angeles by a single mother. Alumni Abigail J. ignites a love of learning, sets children up for success, and serves as an inspirational role model in her community. The saying, “It takes a village to raise a child,” has special meaning for the Downey, California elementary school teacher in bilingual education. She can never forget the teachers who made a huge impact in her own life as an English language learner growing up in a low-income family in Downey. Abigail earned her MS in Education at National University in 2017, becoming the first in her family with a graduate degree. Today, she’s paying it forward as a teacher in the same community that inspired and empowered her. When Abigail enrolled at NU, she was accompanied by five teaching colleagues. “We had our own little cohort, and they’ll always have a special place in my heart.
